Artificial intelligence transparency statement
How we use AI
We use AI for simple, low‑risk tasks, such as:
- helping our staff research, summarise or draft information
- improving our website and tools
- analysing non‑personal data to understand what people need.
AI helps us to work more efficiently so we can keep our information accurate and up to date and improve our service. All information published on business.gov.au is checked and verified by a person before it goes live.
What we don't use AI for
We do not use AI to:
- give you information that has not been checked by a person
- make decisions about your eligibility for grants, funding or support
- interact with you without a person involved
- help you make decisions about your business.
A person is always responsible for important decisions and for the information we publish.
Keeping your information safe
We take privacy and security seriously. Our use of AI follows:
- the Privacy Act 1988
- the Protective Security Policy Framework
- the Australian Government's Policy for the responsible use of AI in government.
We carefully check all AI-generated information to make sure it is accurate, clear and useful. We do not use AI with sensitive personal information unless the law allows it and it is properly protected.
How we oversee AI use
business.gov.au is managed by the Department of Industry, Science and Resources (DISR).
DISR has:
- an AI Governance Committee, which oversees how AI is used in the department
- an Accountable Official who makes sure AI is used safely and transparently, as required by government policy
- clear rules so every AI use case has a responsible owner.
